Personal Experience Essays

Personal Experience Essays When you begin your Freshman Composition or Developmental English class, one of the first types of assignments you will receive is the personal experience essay. Writing teachers begin courses with this type of essay because they believe that writing about a personal topic will be a little bit easier for you than writing on a more abstract topic. In the personal experience essay, you will be asked to write about a common life experience that you have had. You may also be asked to comment on how the experience influenced you. For instance, you might see a question like this one for your personal experience assignment: It is often said that every cloud has a silver lining. Write about a negative experience in your life and explain how the experience ultimately had a positive impact upon you. You need to think carefully about how to respond to personal experience questions. Remember that it is better to focus this type of essay on an academic experience, if possible. So, for a question like the one above, you could write about how your application for one college was rejected, but then you were accepted by another college that you liked even better. Although you will learn later in your composition course that most teachers don't want you to use a first-person perspective in your academic writing, you can and should use the words "I" and "me" in your personal experience essay. Personal experience essays can vary in length, so be sure to ask your professor about the word limit for this type of writing assignment.
